Raising a child is already challenging, but what if you have to do it alone?
For Rolando, 45, raising his three children has been a journey marked by determination and love. From managing daily routines to navigating emotional moments, Rolando embraces the responsibilities with unwavering dedication.
"It's also difficult being a solo parent because you have to provide care and love to the children, ensuring they never feel lacking," he said.
However, being a single parent to his children becomes even more daunting when considering broader challenges like climate change, including phenomena like El Niño, which can worsen the difficulties of providing and safeguarding his family.
Rolando recalled how his children were significantly affected by El Niño, especially in their education and daily lives. The erratic weather patterns disrupted their schooling, making it difficult for them to attend classes regularly or concentrate on their studies.
"They didn't go to school today because the weather is hot, they said they'll just go tomorrow," Rolando said.
Moreover, the financial burden brought about by El Niño affected their family's livelihood, especially Rolando's occupation as a farmer, contributing additional burden as the sole provider for his family.
Amid these hardships, Rolando remained determined to provide his children with the support and care they needed, striving to create stability and resilience in their lives amidst the challenges posed by environmental changes.
"Despite everything, I manage to find money for food. There are days when someone hires me for daily labor, and with that, I can buy rice. PhP250 a day, I make it last the whole day. It's not every day though; in a month, it happens only once or twice," he added.
Rolando is among 200 households supported by Save the Children Philippines and Western Samar Development Foundation, Inc. (WESADEF) with cash assistance totaling PhP10,000. This aid aims to help them find alternative livelihoods and cope with the impacts of El Niño.
Additionally, he participated in training programs focused on animal husbandry, vegetable farming, and crop cultivation. These sessions were designed to promote sustainable agricultural methods and enhance livelihood opportunities for households.
Save the Children Philippines Humanitarian Manager Faisah Ali emphasized that the cash assistance initiative not only supports families during El Niño but also ensures that children receive essential support during these times.
“This aid aims to alleviate the economic strain on households, thereby enabling parents to provide better care and opportunities for their children despite the challenging environmental conditions,” Ali said.
Facing difficulties in farming, Rolando expressed his intention to utilize the money he received to establish a rice-selling business within their community, hoping to expand its growth for the future.
"I am truly grateful to be one of those chosen, and this assistance has been a tremendous help to my family. It will help us get by, and I won't struggle as much to provide for my children, especially since they are still young," Rolando added.
